TALYBONT ended Bont’s hopes of winning the treble within the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League as they lifted the League Cup after a thrilling 4-3 win in the final on Wednesday evening.
After the disappointment of missing out in the Newman Memorial Trophy final to the same opponents a week earlier, Talybont were eager to claim the silverware.
Bont, who had seen Ben Lewis sent off after 21 minutes, showed great character to hit back from 4-1 down, but Talybont held on to lift the Cup at Park Avenue.
Two goals from Jamie Morgan and singles by Bari Southgate and Niall Coleridge secured the win, before Talybont skipper Jac Williams lifted the Cup at the end.
The final kicked off in ideal conditions, with the sun shining and very little breeze, with Bont aiming to keep on track for the treble, and Talybont looking to avenge last week’s final defeat to the same opposition.
Bont started the quickest, taking the lead in the first 5 minutes through a goal from Owen Evans, slotting in at the back post.
Talybont came back into the game strongly, playing some excellent free flowing football, which resulted in the equaliser from Jamie Morgan with a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the penalty box.
Talybont continued to press for the second goal and, playing some slick passing football, their superiority was rewarded when Bari Southgate fired home, after a defence-splitting pass by Mike Fitzpatrick.
The game changed on 20 minutes with Ben Lewis of Bont being shown a straight red card for a late challenge, and Talybont took full advantage of their numerical superiority, hitting the woodwork twice.
Talybont added a third goal with a well worked moved being finished off by Niall Coleridge, and the title contenders now faced a mountain to climb with 10 men.
Bont, however, remained dangerous, and threatened with a flurry of set-pieces towards the end of the half which caused anxious moments for Talybont’s defence.
Right on half-time, a superb left-handed stop from Ashley Wright in the Talybont goal, from a Dewi Sion strike, ensured the score stayed 3-1 to Talybont at the interval.
Worse followed for Bont in the second half when Talybont extended their lead to 4-1 with a goal from inside the box by Jamie Morgan, his second of the game.
Bont rallied following the goal and, throwing caution to the wind, they began playing some long balls into the Talybont defence, which resulted in a goal from Andrew Carree low into the bottom corner of the net, reducing their deficit to 4-2.
With 10 minutes to go, a headed goal from Gwynfryn Hughes brought Bont back to within one goal of taking the game into extra time, and then Andrew Gilbert missed an opportunity with minutes to go to equalise, but Talybont held firm to win.
They saw out the remainder of the game to win the District League Cup for the third time in their history, having been runners-up to Aberdyfi in last year’s final.
