AN Aberystwyth choir will battle it out against a string of rivals in a BBC talent show next Saturday.
Elinor Powell’s Sgarmes will appear on BBC’s Pitch Battle on BBC1 at 7.30pm on Saturday, 24 June, competing against five other groups.
The popular group, which has performed hundreds of gigs across Wales and England. But their latest challenge will see them try to win a £50,000 prize by impressing judges such as Gareth Malone, Kelis and Bebe Rexha to reach the next round of the competition.
Elinor Powell, who formed Sgarmes in 2006, said that while the group has had plenty of high points, competing in Pitch Battle would be a different experience.
She said that after seeing an online link to Pitch Battle she had decided the show was the perfect opportunity for the group, with the show’s producers looking for close harmony singing groups who also use choreography.
After an initial audition, Sgarmes discovered they had been chosen as one of the groups to appear in the show, and they are hoping to impress enough to get through to the next stage.
These days a large part of Sgarmes is made up of former Penglais and Penweddig pupils, including Elinor herself and Sgarmes’ manager Huw Bates. The rest are all ex-students from Aberystwyth University, including Cambrian News features editor Julie McNicholls Vale who is the only remaining original Sgarmes member from 2006!
